Centre for History and Paleography (NBCF)
The Centre for
History and Palaeography was established in December 1974 as a department
of the National Bank Cultural Foundation (NBCF). Its purpose is to preserve,
collect and make microfilms of historical archives and manuscripts in Greece
and in Greek Libraries in the Balkans and Middle East. Over the years, 7.000
manuscripts and 20 archival collections were microfilmed. The Centre also
has a collection of 100 manuscripts mainly in Greek and some in Arabic,
Persian, Turkish, Slavic and Hebrew. The Centre also organises seminars
in Greek Paleography and Textology, and has developed an Index of Greek
Scribes from 1600 to 1800. Furthermore, it has established a laboratory
for the conservation of manuscripts, and publishes a bulletin with the year
reports of its activities and the descriptions of manuscript collections.
Some of the places where the Centre has focused its activities are, the
Greek Orthodox Patriarchates of Alexandria in Egypt and Jerusalem, Mount
Sinai, the islands of the Aegean See, Cyprus, Mount Athos, Macedonia, Thessaly
and Peloponnesus.
